Prague Spring opened the capital to outstanding Czech and world music

It's sixty years ago when Rafael Kubelik, then conductor of Czech Philharmony, came up with the idea of the music festival held in Prague. The first festival in 1946 (just one year after the capitulations of Nazist Germany and the end of the World War) was held under the patronage of Czechoslovak president Edvard Beneš, and its organizing committee was made up of important figures in Czech musical life.

The festival in 1946 should also celebrate fifty years of Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, that was given the highest honor: to appear on all the orchestral concerts.

Easter eggs attracted record numbers of visitors to Czech Republic

Full house - we can describe Prague and other places in the Czech Rep. during Easter holiday in that way. Number of tourists visiting the country climbed to record levels comparing same holidays in recent years.

Server ceskenoviny.cz cited analyst Jaromir Beranek: "The number of foreign visitors increased to 280.000 persons that stayed in hotels and other accommodation facilities during Easter holiday." And tens of thousands visitors came accross border for just one-day trip.

Charles IV - Czech king and Holy Roman Emperor in the second half of the 14th century. Probably one the most important persons in the Prague's history. You can see evidence of his presence almost on every city corner - just walk through the center.

The Charles bridge is without any doubt the most remarkable monument that evokes his reminiscence. The bridge, crowded all 365 days a year, reminds the Emperor's shrewdness. The legend says that he ordered to mix thousands of eggs into the bridge foundations to make it stronger. Maybe this is the answer to question why the bridge survived centuries.

Film Time by one of the most popular Korean directors, Kim Ki-duk will open the 41st Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF).

»The work of Kim Ki-duk has been discovered for public at large partly in previous Karlovy Vary festivals. The director has been our guest twice already and the screening of each of his films has been attended by great expectations on part of the audiences,« said Jiří Bartoška, festival president.

Oil mining museum opened in Hodonin

On Friday, May 26, Museum of oil mining and geology was opened in Hodonin, town in southeast Moravia, near to Czech border with Slovakia, some 270 km from Prague on highway D1.

The reader can be surprised now. Oil mining in the Czech Rep.? Is that a joke or what. Well, even if the current production of oil from Czech oil-fields do not cover even one percent of consumption in the CR, the are some oil wells – and several of them still in service – in the south part of Moravia.

Czech beers on the top positions

Czech beers on the top positions

Královský Pivovar Krušovice (the Royal Brewery of Krušovice), one of the oldest breweries in the Czech Republic, won a prize in prestigious World Beer Cup in the USA. Its light lager, Imperial, got the gold medal in the Bohemian-Style Pilsener Category among 39 entries.

Second position in the same category goes to CZECHVAR - Premium Czech Lager, that is brewed in Budějovický Budvar n.p. Bronze medal goes to German beer Pils from Alpirsbacher Klosterbrauerei brewery.

Czech legislative elections end in deadlock

The result of Czech election to the lower parliamentary chamber ended in a stalemate. The opposition liberal-conservative Civic Democrat Party (ODS) gaind 35,38 percent in the June 2-3 election while Social Democrats 32,32 percents.

Under the country's system of proportional representation, the Civic Democrats won 81 seats, the Social Democrats have 74 seats, the Communists took 26 seats, the Christian Democrats won 13 seats and the Greens have remaining six seats. The 5 % threshold to enter the Assembly has not been reached by any other party. Greens entered to the Parliament for the first time in history.

Brazilian tapir borned in Prague ZOO

First Brazilian tapir ever borned in Prague ZOO, saw the world for the first time on Sunday 11 June 2006. His mother is Ivana (six years old) and father Christian (Three years old) from ZOO in Nurnberg, Germany.

Ivana takes care properly after the small tapir who has no name yet. After the birth he had 8,3 kg, but he drinks the water (everybody should do so, because of hot weather in Prague this week) so much, so his weight is now 9,4 kg, said Vít Kahle, spokesman of the Prague ZOO.

Czech football representation, semi-finalists at Euro 2004 and ranked second in the world by FIFA, lost it game with Italy yesterday. The result Czech Rep. - Italy 0 - 2 is not enough to pass to the quarterfinal, so Czechs are going home. The coach Karel Bruckner and all the players will have the chance to find out what has been done wrong.

Holidays begin with physical exercising in Prague

While most of the Prague citizens plan to have a vacation during first July week and flee from the city – there are 2 free days during the week (national celebrations on Wednesday and Thursday), others will arrive to Prague from all parts of Czech Republic to participate on the »14th Vsesokolsky Slet« (Meeting of all Sokols), giant gathering which takes place every six years.

Around twenty thousand people should directly participate on the 2006 Slet. The peak of the celebration - main programme takes place at the Evzen Rosicky stadium at Prague's Strahov on July 5 and 6. There are accompanying events on various places around Prague during the week.
