16 May 2007 Saint Petersburg State Male Ballet Performs For Prague Audience

14 May 2007, 16:02 - Art
After its performance in Pilsen today, Saint Petersburg State Male Ballet will show up in the Prague's Congress Center on Wednesday 16 May 2007 on its first visit to Czech Republic.

"I thought, that I dance Dying Swan the best, but I have to admit that Michailovsky is definitely better…" legendary 82-year-old Russian ballet star Maya Pliseckaya once said. Their performances are popular not only among ballet art connoisseurs, but also among those, who are simply interested in the spectacle.

Each of the show presented all around the world caused controversy and disputes among antagonists and protagonists of the group. One thing is for sure – a ballet show performed by men dancing on their points while wearing muslin dresses and tight corsets won’t leave anyone cold and stolid.

Formerly a celebrated soloist with the Boris Eifman Dance Theatre, founder Valery Mikhailovsky came up with the idea of an all-male ballet company in 1991. His group has already performed at many international festivals and stages, from USA to South Africa and from China to Israel.

As New York Times once wrote, "The comic parts in the show are exceptionally sophisticated, because the choreographies prepared for tiny, etheric ballerinas are performed by strong, athletic men." But the show worth it
