Friday 17 November is a state holiday - Day of the fight for Freedom and Democracy. Czechs commemorate marking the start of Velvet Revolution in 1989, when the Communist regime brutally suppressed student demonstration on the Národní třída. But the memories also comes into the year 1939 when German Nazi occupants closed Czech Universities after a series of students student gatherings and the funeral procession for student Opletal killed by Nazis during one demonstration against occupation. This "accident" should not be forgotten.
Banks, offices and some stores are closed this day.
