Civic Democrats Have Majority In Czech Senate

28 October 2006, 20:53 - Politics
ODS, centre-right Civic Democratic Party, gained 14 seats in today's Senate runoff elections, that gives the part simple majority in the chamber, according to results released just after 3 hours after closing the polling stations bz Cyech Statistical Office.

ODS gained clear victory in all 4 Prague constituencies in which the elections took place.

Twenty-seven seats in the Parliament's upper chamber were to be filled in the runoff. Best two candidates from the last week's first round passed to the second round in each of the 27 constituencies.

The Civic Democrats, who also won the June elections and were the strongest in local elections last week, were seeking re-election in 10 constituencies and needed to win just 14 seats to gain a Senate majority.

The party now dominates the Senate with 41 seats (there are in total 81 Senators with 6 years mandate; every two years one third of them is voted).

Will this result help to solve the political stalemate after June parliamentary election?
