The Czech Republic plans to send a barrel of beer to Brussels as an »extraordinary ambassador« to show its opposition to a proposed rise in EU alcohol taxes.

The 31 percent rise in the minimum EU tax on beer and spirits planned by the European Commission would raise the price for beer which seems unbearable for people who are »addicted« to drink beer. Czechs are world's biggest beer-drinking nation per capita is and drinking beer belongs to the Czech culture. Same case as wine creates part of the French culture.

Czechs take their beer very seriously. The Pilsener brewing process was created centuries ago in the city of Plzeň, about 80km south-west of Prague. Good beer is brewed in big breweries - now with international owner, but the best one is being brewed in small, independent family breweries. One of them, Chodovar in Chodová Planá, opened beer spa.
