World famous and controversial Czech art photographer Jan Saudek (71) opened his own gallery at the prestigious address in the very center of Prague, just some steps from the Old Town Sqaure in Celetna street.

The grand opening took place yesterday, 17 January, with more than three hundred guests from Czech cultural scene. During the opening, new book of photographs of Mr Saudek called Chains of love (Pouta lásky) has been presented.

Visitors can find 110 photographs including also some picture, that were not previously published. It includes also some of the famous portraits and some large format portraits.

It is not quite common that a Czech photographer gets his own permanent gallery, but Mr Saudek is one of the exceptions. "It is same as if you have your own shop. You can sell and earn money. Or you can make bankruptcy. So I have mixed feelings," he told reporters.

His work is noted for its hand-tinted portrayal of painterly dream worlds, often inhabited by nude woman who is surrounded by bare plaster walls or painted backdrops, frequently re-using identical elements as for instance a clouded sky or a view of Prague's Charles bridge.

Religious motives or the ambiguity between man and woman have also been some of Jan Saudek's recurring themes. His work was the subject of attempts at censorship in the West during the 1990s.

Jan Saudek is also an "object" of the tabloid press as he had several love affairs.

This gallery is the first sales gallery of the artist. It is open for public daily from 10am to 8pm. The admission is 150 CZK, discounted for students and seniors 80 CZK.
