Former Czech President Vaclav Havel left Saturday for the United States, where he will spend four months living in New York City and Washington, D.C. The former statesman who recently celebrated his 70, travels to the U.S. after an invitation from New York's Columbia University and Washington's Library of Congress.
Havel became head of Czechoslovakia in December 1989, and also served as president from January 1993 after the country split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. After his second term, he was "replaced" by Vaclav Klaus.
The former president starts with a seven-week residency at Columbia University, where he will participate in lectures and discussions. In Washington, Havel plans to spend most of his time at the U.S. Library of Congress.
