National Technical Museum of Prague closes for reconstruction

The ongoing modernization work on the building and interiors of the National Technical Museum of Prague (NTM) closes the gates of the museum from September 12, 2006. The project plans with the reopening the museum on early 2008. That year is going to be one-hundred years anniversary from first opening such museum in Prague.

The museum, established in 1908, was first located in Prague Castle Area in Hradčany in Schwarzenberg Palace. The current seat of the museum, on Prague Letná, near to the largest Prague park, was built in 1938-1942.

Its collection now consists of sixty thousand items plus almost 400 000 archival documents and books documenting the development of technology and science in Czech Republic, Czechoslovakia respectively.

The Letná building which will now undergo the reconstruction has a large and spacious hall that allows to display large rail and road vehicles as well as aircraft. The building itself is registered on the central list of cultural monuments in the Czech Republic.

Permanent exhibition remains the same with just some adjustments after the overall reconstruction, but the museum management prepares new exhibitions. They will be Communications, that on 570 m2 will take a look into the history, present and new trends in dynamically growing industry. Other exhibitions count with the cycle Technology in everyday life, Astronomy and Printing.

National Technical Museum, however, worth seeing now, before it closes its gates. If you wish to do so, you have one month and some days.
