New Govt Appointed By Czech President Klaus

4 September 2006, 17:40 - Politics
Czech President Václav Klaus has appointed a new government under the leadership of the Prime Minister Mirek Toploánek on Prague Castle today. The minority cabinet now has the obligation to get a confidence vote within 30 days before the Chamber of Deputies. But the ministers have a little chance to win it. The vote is scheduled to the end of the term, October 4.

The opposition Social Democrats and Communists say none of their members support the government. They have exactly half of all seats in the Chamber of Deputies, same as the right wing parties.

Jiří Paroubek, leader of Social Democrats and former Primer Minister, has said, he principally disagree with the new Foreign Affairs Minister about the plan to approve to allow US Forces build the new rocket base in the Czech Republic, the plan with more than four fifth of Czech citizens do not support.

Topolánek has said he wanted to start reforms of healthcare, welfare and pension systems, but was unlikely to make any fundamental adjustments before an early election, which he wants held in the spring of 2007.
