New Czech government, second after the general election that took place in June 2006, under the leadership of Mr Topolanek (Civic Democrats, ODS) is undergoing the procedure of getting the constitutional vote of confidence today. The debate started with a war of words in the Chamber of deputies this morning.

It is still unclear at what time the crucial vote takes place, but the leaders of parliamentary clubs agreed on prolonging this session. The vote could take place on Friday evening or during the night, then.

Topolanek's coalition holds 100 of the 200 seats in parliament, falling short of a majority in a 200 hundred seat Chamber.

Two opposition MPs from the Social Democratic Party (CSSD), Michal Pohanka and Milos Melcak, said before the session that they would ensure a majority for Topolanek's government, reportedly by abstaining from the vote. They have been accused of corruption by their party leader.
